Gutters, light, yard

Gutters, lighting and landscaping in Telford, PA

Gutters and gutter guards, outdoor landscape lighting, landscaping, hardscaping, lattice and exterior faucet bibs, handled by one licensed handyman.

Chapter 01

Overflowing gutters, a dark walk and a skirt that has seen better days

The outside of a house takes the weather so the inside does not have to, and it shows. Gutters overflow over the front door every time it rains hard. The path to the steps is pitch black after dinner. The gap under the deck has become a highway for whatever lives in the yard. None of it is dramatic, and all of it gets worse the longer it waits.

Joel MacLeod handles exterior work for homeowners in Telford, PA and across Montgomery and Bucks County. His 25+ years in home construction and landscaping cover both the carpentry side of the outside and the planting and hardscape side.

Water first, then light, then the yard

Water management comes first because it protects everything else. Gutters are hung with a steady pitch toward each downspout, fastened into solid backing, and fitted with gutter guards where leaf load is the problem. Water that is carried away from the foundation does not rot the siding, stain the walls or turn the flower bed into a pond.

Landscape lighting and exterior faucet bibs are the practical outdoor upgrades. Lighting goes in along walks, steps and beds with weatherproof connections. A new bib replaces one that drips behind the siding. Lattice, shrubs and a tidy deck skirt finish the picture, and hardscaping gives paths and patios a base that stays put.

Each of these jobs is sized to the house in front of him, not to a template.

Chapter 03

Debris hauled, beds tidied

When the work is done, old gutter sections, trimmings and packaging go onto the truck. Beds are raked, paths are swept and the yard is left the way you would want to find it.

Four kinds of exterior job around Montgomery and Bucks County

Where the outside of a house usually needs attention

Gutters and gutter guards

Gutters come off clogged, sagging or pulling away from the fascia, and go back up pitched toward the downspouts. Guards keep leaves and shingle grit out so the next storm has somewhere to go.

Outdoor landscape lighting

A dark walk or front step is a trip hazard as well as a missed chance to show off the house. Fixtures are placed along paths and beds, wired for the weather, and checked after dusk.

Landscaping and hardscaping

Beds get cleaned out and edged, plantings are set where they will have room to grow, and paths and patio areas are laid on a prepared base. Joel's background includes landscaping as well as home construction.

Lattice, shrubs and exterior faucet bibs

Lattice closes in a deck skirt so animals and leaves stay out. Shrubs are set and mulched, and an exterior faucet bib that drips or will not shut off gets replaced before the first freeze.
